To discuss the operation of this page, please leave a message at "User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands/talk" or at the Village Pump.
This page is for editors who are not administrators to request for categories to be renamed and for files to be replaced by other files across all Wikimedia projects.
  • To request for a category to be renamed, go to the "Category moves" and follow the instructions.
  • To request for a file to be replaced by another file, for example, because the original file has been deleted or renamed, go to the appropriate sub-section of the "Image replacement requests" section and type the following command at the bottom of the relevant list: "{{universal replace|[OLD NAME.jpg]|[NEW NAME OR ANOTHER FILE.jpg]|reason=STATE THE REASON FOR THE REQUEST HERE.}}".
    • Requests relating to renamed files is for requesting occurrences of an old file name to be replaced with the new file name it has been renamed to. Click on the link in the sub-section.
    • Other requests is for listing other requests such as replacing one file with a different one.
    • Manual replacements is for listing files that must be handled manually. This sub-section is for experienced editors.

Please read the warnings below carefully before making any requests. Thanks.

Warnings

Please note:

  • No controversial name changes. All moves have to follow the language policy. Please do not request name changes that you know may be controversial (this includes, for example, renaming locations into a different local language—even if "that is the official name used there"). Do check file talk pages for objections before requesting a change here. If you wish to request such moves, please add the {{Move}} template to the category pages, or use the Categories for discussion procedure. This allows discussion on the issue to take place and objections—if any—to be made. You may wish to alert other editors to the discussion by leaving a message at the Village Pump.
If you challenge a request added here, please simply remove it and re-paste it below the "Category moves to be discussed" header down this page and add your reason for challenging it. It would also be kind to inform the requester (if signed) and invite them to discuss the requested name change.
  • Adding interwikis. Please include as many interlanguage links (interwikis) as possible in categories to be moved.
  • No replacement of images in other formats with SVGs. To avoid World War III, CommonsDelinker will ignore a command to replace an image if the new image is in an SVG format and the original is not.
  • Updating references to the new category name. It is the duty of the requester of a category move to update all references to the new category name where needed. This part of the task is not automated. (Use the "What links here" tab to find out which categories or pages are still linked to the old category name.)
  • MediaWiki limitation. If you add hundreds of requests at the same time, note that the MediaWiki software isn't able to process thousands of templates correctly for display. Thus, the statement "0 entries moved, 0 to go" may be inaccurate.
  • Bot problem. If the CommonsDelinker bot that carries out the tasks on this page is stuck for too long or you encounter other technical problems, please contact Magnus Manske.

Category moves

[edit]
Request for a non controversial name change of a category:

All moves/name changes have to follow Commons policy. Please do not request changes that may be controversial.

You are fully responsible for the requested category move.

Please remember to include an explanation and your username to new requests. This makes it easier for admins to process them.

If requesting multiple moves for the same reason, please copy-and-paste the reason in.
Good explanations are short, clear, and concise, such as "typo", "full name", "consistency with related categories", and so on. Longer explanations are useful in complicated issues.

Use the following command template (please fill out all fields and stick on the exact format):

{{move cat|Old cat name|New cat name|3=Explanation|user={{subst:REVISIONUSER}}}}
Example
{{move cat|Nice, Palais de Nice|Palais de Nice|3=The first word "Nice" is unnecessary.|user={{subst:REVISIONUSER}}}}

Updating references to the new category name is the duty of the requester. Update all references to the new category name where needed. This part of the task is not automated. (Use the "What links here" tab to find out which categories or pages are still linked to the old category name.)

Rename Category:Coats of arms of the Latin Empire to Category:Attributed coats of arms of the Latin Empire (0 entries moved, 8 to go) (Requested by Qbli2mHd)
Reason provided: Includes arms of Philip of Courtenay, titular Latin emperor after Byzantium retook Constantinople; these were later attributed to previous Latin emperors. – Admin: Approve

@Belbury: I think the disambiguation is needed. There is something else commonly called boogie board. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:34, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Comment: I'm not sure about this category move, because: If Gerhard Richter did not accept the photos here (he is 93 years old and a well-known German artist), they have to be deleted, because there is no FOP in Germany inside churches or other buildings. --176.1.13.166 22:23, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Rename Category:Charles Knight (stained glass artist) to Category:Stained-glass windows by Charles Knight (10 entries moved, 0 to go) (Requested by 176.1.9.52)
Reason provided: There exists already a person category with his paintings, in this category are only his stained-glass windows and it’s now subcategory of the person category, thus it should have a name now only for his stained-glass windows – Admin: Approve
Comment: If there’s no FOP in England for photos of church windows, then I suppose that the photographs of his windows in England have to be deleted, because he died in 1990. That’s not 70 years ago and he can’t have accepted uploaded photographs taken after his death. And there also are painting in his Category:Charles Knight (1901-1990) that are not old enough. Someone should take a look at all that. He was landscape painter and stained-glass artist, see also en:Charles Knight (artist). —176.1.9.52 16:20, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Rename Category:Gebrandschilderd raam in de kerk van Sondel to Category:Stained-glass window of De Haven, Sondel (2 entries moved, 0 to go) (Requested by 176.1.14.14)

Rename Category:Category navigational templates for municipalities to Category:Category navigational templates for municipalities in Cuba (0 entries moved, 15 to go) (Requested by 176.1.10.36)
Reason provided: All templates in the category are for municipalities in Cuba now, see Category:Category navigational templates for Cuba. A Category:Category navigational templates for municipalities in Cuba is better than 2 categories with the same 15 subcategories. – Admin: Approve
Other idea for this move: Only the content of the category should be moved to the new name. The templates have the category directly in the template, so the bot can move them.
Therefore I created Category:Category navigational templates for municipalities in Cuba, then the bot can't move the category, but only all templates in the category.
Afterwards, the old category can and should be refilled with 3 subcategories and 3 templates that are now in Category:Category navigational templates for country subdivision. —176.1.10.36 17:43, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I don’t understand any Czech, but please read the editnotice above the edit window or read the beginning of this page: no controversial moves here.
Looking at the two version histories of the category now and of the target name of the category, I see some kind of edit war since yesterday about the name of the category, a revert after the move and the category not being anymore on the name, where the older category versions since 2024 were. These are on the target name now, therefore I think, the redirect shouldn’t be deleted now with those old category versions. Is it possible to get the old category versions until yesterday back to the actual category name which has been edited very much since yesterday by merging all those versions there? I’ve rarely seen a Commons category which has been edited so much on one day by so many different users. Another category move now has to be discussed between those users. —176.1.17.247 19:32, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
And please note that there are 1,291 files in that category, so that every move is a big workload for bot and servers. There really has to be a consensus first for a category name, where it can stay without further moves. But it would be a very good idea to create subcategories for those many files. —176.1.16.30 22:10, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

That's totally OK ! (I just created the category but did not added the initial tag to these photographs) Eskivor (talk) 09:43, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Please check this again before moving, because there are so many photographs in this category. I changed "Photographs of" to "Photographs by" today morning, because the photos don’t show the named user which would be "Photographs of …" and I thought that this user took the photos themselves, because the category had been in the red Category:Photographs by SecretName101 since the creation. Therefore I created that parent category a few days ago.
But after having looked upon that again now, I noticed that the named user only uploaded the photos, but they wasn’t the photographer themselves. That’s why I change the target category name now to "Photographs uploaded by …". I don’t know, if also "Photographs by" would be correct in English for uploaders of photos taken by other people, but it would indicate that the user took the photos themselves which is not correct. They uploaded photos from Flickr for example, just look at the description of the first file in the category File:$15 & Fairness Toronto -DefendTheWater (40079299285).jpg. I now think that also the parent Category:Photographs by SecretName101 should better be moved to Category:Photographs uploaded by SecretName101, see the new request below this one. Because of this, Category:Photographs by Wikimedia Commons users maybe isn't the correct parent category for that category neither, but I don’t know, if there exists another parent category for users who uploaded photos instead of having taken them themselves. Can you fix the parent category? —176.1.9.150 15:13, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ellicrum: There is at least one image of a lion with an Indian elephant in that category, making your proposed name inaccurate. The common names are fine here. The same goes for Category:Leopards with other animals, Category:Lions with other animals, and Category:Giraffes with lions. —Zacwill (talk) 12:56, 13 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Zacwill:
I had also noticed the presence of that illustration of a lion with an Asian elephant in a circus setting. My initial plan was simply to move that file to the more general categories "Panthera leo with other species" and "Elephas maximus with other species". So the category in question here should indeed be reserved for the two African mammals, where there are still a few dozen uncategorized files in savanna environments.
That said, I can understand your hesitation regarding the renaming of this specific category. However, we are not dealing with the same situation for the other categories listed here. Vernacular names can certainly work (and of course, we can keep the redirect), but the idea remains to standardize the titling with all other similar categories, which mostly rely on the scientific names. As for "Giraffes with lions" specifically, I don’t see why we would use the preposition in this case. --Ellicrum {bablute [...]} 21:26, 16 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Comment: The page Institution:Castle of Belœil should also be moved to Institution:Château de Belœil, now it has another name than all the categories for the building, and the page title is not the same as the Wikidata labels in any language or the Wikipedia article pages. —176.1.0.128 20:03, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thinking about it once again, category names like Category:Gardens of Château of Belœil, Category:Orangery of Château of Belœil, Category:Paintings in the Château of Belœil or Category:Portrait paintings in the Château of Belœil are not only a language mix and without proper name of the château, but also misspellings. Thus, they have to be moved anyway.
There are two possibilities for those kind of category names: 1. with a proper name (if there is one), 4 Wikipedia article names point at "Château de Belœil", or 2. as description of the (only) château in the location Belœil, Belgium (on that en-Wikipedia page it is also written this way: as "château of Belœil" with link to en:Château de Belœil). Then château is an English substantive and has to be written with lower case: "château in Belœil" or "château of Belœil", but never "Château of" with upper case as English substantive in the middle of a category name, that’s language mix and misspelling.
A Category:Château of Belœil may be correct at the beginning (even if users can’t see directly, if this language mix shall be a proper name or a description and leads to confusion), but "château of Belœil" as English substantive has to be written with lower case in a sentence and in the middle of categories, and 4 of the 5 subcategories are misspellings. Therefore, it’s much better to take Category:Château de Belœil as category name as some Wikipedias do, if the 4 misspelled subcategories shall not be moved to names with "château of Belœil" instead, but no Wikipedia takes this as article name. —176.1.0.128 08:58, 28 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Categories: "stained glass windows" => "stained-glass windows"

[edit]

There are too many bot templates on this page without any of these stained-glass windows request now, therefore I put them onto a subpage now, then all of those template will be shown correctly again. Perhaps that’s better, because there are still so many of them left. That page can be archieved later. —176.1.1.46 05:38, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

CommonsDelinker: Replace File:Map AP dist all shaded.png (LU,GU) with File:Ap-districts.png (LU,GU) across all Wikimedia projects. Reason: Updated based on changes to borders in 2015.

CommonsDelinker: Replace File:Weltkarte tropen.png (LU,GU) with File:Koppen-Geiger Map A present.svg (LU,GU) across all Wikimedia projects. Reason: File:Weltkarte tropen.png is outdated (1992) and the equator is placed wrong. File:Koppen-Geiger Map A present.svg uses current data (2016) and has the correct equator. Can some bot please change all uses of the old one for the new please? TIA --User:H-stt 14:29, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Replace images with .svg version

[edit]

I am active in the SVG project, converting raster graphics into scalable vector graphics (mainly coat of arms). The new images have a better quality but I always need to replace all occurrences of the old image in all articles, templates and in all language wikis by hand which sometimes takes longer than creating the new .svg image. I know that the bot currently will not replace raster graphics with a .svg file. This rule was made 15 years ago (in 2007 maybe .svg were not that popular), has the opinion about this rule changed or is there room for a new discussion?

As I am creating .svgs from raster graphics I need to replaces the old image manually on all sites in all MediaWiki occurrences (Wikipedia (all languages), Wikidata,...). Maxwxyz (talk) 08:52, 17 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

i agree that the file replacement with (verified) svg should be permitted. GioviPen GP msg 15:05, 4 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Krd, You were around during that time, Do you remember the main reason(s) why that rule was created? All the Best -- Chuck Talk 21:36, 7 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Mostly, because a few svg enthusiasts did very bad conversions to svg, guessing colors etc. and communities got pissed off because we were replacing correct pngs with incorrect svg interpretations of those pngs. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:17, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I cannot find any evidence. PNG by PNG, SVG by SVG, GIF by PNG, no PNG by SVG ever. Were all the piss-bad replacements done manually? Taylor 49 (talk) 21:57, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Support I strongly plead for allowing CommonsDelinker to replace PNG with SVG files because in most cases the SVG is much better and should be used instead. ChemSim (talk) 21:22, 19 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Strong support for allowing CommonsDelinker to replace non-SVG with SVG. Maybe we need a rule of type "do NOT request more than 3 such replacements during one day". PS: CommonsDelinker is currently on strike NOT doing ANY global replacements at all. Taylor 49 (talk) 10:34, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Comment Upgraded to RFC and listed at Template:Centralized discussion. My proposal is now:
  • remove the technical restriction from CommonsDelinker making it refuse PNG to SVG replacements
  • make a rule "a user may request maximally 3 PNG to SVG replacements per 24 hours, requests moved by a sysop from an accessible page to a protected page where CommonsDelinker picks them from do NOT count to the limit"

Sint S...

[edit]

It appear the bot has changed "Ofbyld:Sint-Anne vlag.svg" into "Sint_Annaparochie_vlag.svg", claiming "Criterion 3 (obvious error) · The village is called S".

Indeed, the village is called 'S...', thus a slightly more elaborate reason would be in order. As it is, it goes against your "No controversial name changes." (I am not sure why one would need to enforce 1 name in a multilingual area, but at the least it should not identify the issue as "obvious error".) Paintings by Willem van de Velde (II) by title

[edit]
Rename Category:Paintings by Willem van de Velde (II) by title to Category:New name (0 entries moved, 194 to go) (Requested by Pieter Baas)

.

It is necessary to rename the subcategories of "paintings by Willem van de Velde (II) by the name" of the category and replace the error in the category names wherever it is made. In the category names, replace "de Younger" with "the Younger". Pieter Baas (talk) 09:57, 25 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
